1999-2000 Corporal Punishment
in Tennessee Public Schools

Information compiled and published by Tennesseans for Nonviolent School Disicpline - www.forkidsake.org

United States Department of Education Office for Civil Rights

This information was obtained from the United States Department of Education Office for Civil Rights Compliance Survey. 137 of Tennessee's 138 local school districts were surveyed for the 1999-2000 school year. The Tennessee Department of Education collects no information regarding corporal punishment in any Tennessee schools.

In the systems with the highest rates of corporal punishment, some individual schools report up to 48%of the student enrollment received corporal punishment. Even in school districts with relatively low percentages of corporal punishment, only one or two schools may be responsible for the numbers of students paddled in that district making rates of corporal punishment extremely high in those schools.

Information for individual schools in the districts listed below is available upon request from Tennesseans for Nonviolent School Discipline. The Office for Civil Rights surveys Tennessee public schools every two years. Results of the 2001-2002 survey will be available in 2004.
