What is the best rainwear for kids?
As a parent, you want your kid to feel cosy and well at all times, which is why you are looking for the best possible set of rainwear so that your kid stays warm and dry even in terrible weather. But what exactly is the best rainwear for kids? The answer to this question is a combination of several different factors. The best rainwear for kids has to come in the right size, quality, water column pressure and must also be breathable, light and easy-maintainable. We will go through all these factors below.
With proper rainwear, kids can actually enjoy the rain
Not all adults like rain, but most kids love a good rainy day. When they see it's raining outside, they are in a hurry to go out and run, splash and jump in puddles. Therefore, it is important that the little ones are well dressed to enjoy the rain in the spring, and especially in the autumn when it's starting to be a bit colder.
At Kids-world, you will find a huge selection of high-quality rainwear, well-suited for many hours of play and fun in the rain. So you can be absolutely sure to find one or more rain sets that will suit your kid's activity level and age.
Rainwear for kids in many sizes
We usually have rainwear for kids and babies in many different sizes; size 62, size 68, size 74, size 80, size 86, size 92, size 98, size 104, size 110, size 116, size 122, size 128, size 134, size 140, size 146, size 152, size 158, size 164, size 170 and size 176.
In terms of colours, you will find rainwear in all sorts of colours and shades, such as mustard, black, yellow, blue, brown, green, grey, white, purple, turquoise, red, rose and orange.
Waterproof, breathable and light rainwear for kids
Rainwear for kids should preferably be waterproof, breathable and windproof, to some extent. The perfect rainwear should be comfortable for both small and older kids, on both rainy days and on days when it is not raining, but where the humidity is high.
Rainwear with high water column pressure for babies and kids
On all our rainwear products, you will find the information about the water column pressure. The water column pressure is an indicator which measures how well the rainwear is able to withstand water.
Most waterproof tents, for example, have a water column pressure of at least 1,000 mm. The water column pressure on the rainwear for babies and kids here at Kids-world is between 1,000 mm and 10,000 mm, which is why you should at least get rainwear that resists water as effectively as a waterproof tent.
As such, it is enough to have a water column pressure of 1,000 mm, as long as the rainwear comes with so-called taped seams. Without the taped seams, there is a risk that water may be able to penetrate.
The most important task of rainwear is to keep the person wearing it dry, whether it is a baby, a kid or an adult.
However, the rainwear should also not be compromised on breathability, as without it, the rainwear can quickly get damp on the inside because it is difficult to get rid of the heat if the rainwear is not breathable.
Rainwear for kids in polyester and PU
In short, there are two types of rainwear for kids. There are polyester rainwear and polyurethane rainwear which is also called PU or rubber rainwear.
The material itself naturally has an impact on how breathable and waterproof the rainwear is. A set of rainwear made of polyester is very breathable, but not as waterproof as polyurethane (PU), while polyurethane is very waterproof, but not as breathable. So both materials have advantages and disadvantages.
When is polyester rainwear an advantage
When your kid runs around and plays in the rain, polyester has the advantage of breathability - it lets all the heat and moisture out. But breathable rainwear is impregnated on the outside to prevent the rain from penetrating in. Thus, you should make sure to impregnate a kid's rainwear regularly to keep it waterproof.
Certain raincoats in polyester can get a little heavy from the rain because the material absorbs water, and it can therefore also take longer to dry polyester rainwear.
When is PU rainwear an advantage
PU rain sets are very robust and are highly waterproof, but the baby's skin can not breathe through the material, so extra ventilation is quite important when the little ones run around and splash in the rain. When PU rainwear gets wet, it is very easy to shake off the water, and it dries very quickly after use.
When is rainwear waterproof?
There are different types of outerwear that are similar to rainwear and may even be called "water-repellent", but this does not mean that this is waterproof rainwear. In order to be sure that the rainwear is waterproof, it must have a water column pressure of at least 1,000 mm and have taped seams, as we have already mentioned above.
Your kid's rainwear should be safe
When it comes to kids' clothing and kids in general, safety should always be of the uttermost priority. Speaking of rainwear, a string in the hood is surely practical because it allows the hood to be closed completely, but this is certainly not a good solution, as a loose string can get stuck while playing. Therefore, most rainwear manufacturers have stopped putting cords in caps or elsewhere on the rainwear, and instead, cords have been replaced by velcro straps or inner elastics, which can be adjusted with a button or a buckle.
The Danish Safety Technology Authority also recommends that caps are removable and that kids under the age of seven do not have laces in the area around the neck and head.
Besides, it is also important that there are reflective details on the rainwear so that your kid is visible in traffic - both when on foot and while cycling with you on a dark and wet autumn morning.
Avoid water in the rubber boots and wet trouser legs
Once the kids have put on their rainwear and they go out running, playing and splashing, they can easily feel cold on their arms and legs if the rainwear slips up. Therefore, it is crucial that the rainwear lasts a long time, so that trousers and sweaters do not protrude from the rain set and absorb water.
It can also be quite helpful if the kid has rain pants with straps that you can attach under the rubber boots. In that way, the rain pants are held well, and you will avoid getting water in the rubber boots and wet trouser legs. Besides, elastic or velcro around the ankles and wrists can also be a good solution.
A cute little rain cap is a good accessory for the rainwear, but remember that it must not be too loose or too tight, and it must not be with a string so that accidents are avoided while playing.
When the kids are very young, it can be good to have a one-piece suit to prevent water from entering inside. When the kids are 1 to 6 years old, it can be a good idea to have braces in the rain pants. This way, you will avoid the little ones getting cold stomachs when they run around and play in the sandbox and on the playground.
How to wash rainwear properly?
Rainwear can get worn-out in time, and this applies especially to rainwear for kids, which kids wear on the playground, the forest and many other places. In time, the rainwear can wear out and tear. Should one be so unlucky, there are various methods like duct tape and special glue that are better than starting to sew the rainwear together.
In that way, you can patch the hole, but the rainwear will no longer be 100% waterproof. Both can be an excellent temporary solution, but if your kid needs to be protected from rain and cold, then you will most likely need to invest in a new set of rainwear.
One thing that often gets worn out and tears on rainwear is the elastic foot straps in the leg openings. You can actually sew these on again even without degrading the original quality of the rainwear. If the elastic strap is completely broken, you can get a new one in a regular store. If you have just a little experience in sewing you can easily handle the task. You can adjust the elastic strap as needed, after which you cut off and mount the new elastic straps on the rain pants.
Keep track of your kids rainwear
In an institution such as a nursery or a kindergarten, there are as many sets of rainwear as there are kids, so one kid's rainwear can easily be confused with another's. However, there are several ways you can prevent this from happening. First of all, it is a great idea to write a name or use name stickers on all the clothes that the kid wears in the institution. Also, you can help both yourself and the educators by buying rainwear in various distinctive details so that it is easy to recognize.
It is recommended that you buy an extra set of rainwear for your child. That way, you can have a set of rainwear at home and one in your kid's nursery or kindergarten. This will make things easier for you because you will no longer have to think of whether or not the rain set should be taken back and forth from and to the institution.
In this way, you are sure that you will not forget your kid's rainwear right on the day when the whole group is going for a walk in the woods in a pouring rain. And at the same time, it ensures that you will always have a set of rainwear at home, so you can send your kid out to play and jump in puddles on a nice rainy day.
Rainwear with lining during the transition period
We recommend using rainwear for kids with lining for periods when the summer jacket is too cold, but the winter jacket or a snowsuit is too warm to wear.
Luckily, there is a set of rainwear which might be perfect here. If you choose a 2-piece set of rainwear with lining, you may or may not need to wear both the rain jacket and the rain pants. You can just use the rain pants so that the kid does not get wet when playing in the sandbox or similar.
The jacket can also easily be used on its own, as a kind of transitional jacket.
Rainwear for kids in beautiful colours
In our range, you can find rainwear for kids with lining in many beautiful colours. In that way, it is easy to match the rainwear with rubber boots. Find rainwear in your boy or girl's favourite colour. Typically, you can find rainwear with lining in the following colours: blue, green, yellow, purple, orange, pink and red. You can find plain rainwear with lining, but there is also lots of rainwear with a pattern and rainwear with lining, which has smart reflective details.
If you are interested in rainwear with lining in a specific colour, we recommend you to use the filter at the top of the page.
Buy lined rain pants separately
You can buy both lined rain pants and rain jackets in sets, but also separately. It can be smart to buy rain pants separately if your kid already has a rain jacket or a thermo jacket. Or maybe your kid has just grown out of his/her rain pants faster than his/her rain jacket?
Whatever the reason, there are a lot of different rain pants to choose from. These are available both with and without suspenders. Rain pants with suspenders are typically popular with younger kids because the straps ensure that the rain pants stay where they should, even when the kid is running around and playing outside.
